Lab Abnormalities

What they mean

Below is a list of some of the common labs that your physician may order during a routine physical exam. On occasion the results may come back abnormal. This information is meant to give you a better idea of what those abnormalities mean and what steps should be taken to further evaluate any abnormalities your doctor finds.

Keep in mind that all blood tests are subject to some variability and error even in the best labs. If your doctor were to draw three tubes of blood from you on the same day and send them to the same lab for cholesterol testing he will not get three identical results. There will always be some degree of variation. How much depends on the particular test. There may be additional variation caused by medications, food, and the physical condition you are in at the moment ( ie: stressed, not stressed, feeling hot, feeling cold, suffering from an illness).  Because all these things can affect the outcome of your test, the first step is always to repeat the test. Many times an abnormal blood test comes back completely fine when it is rechecked. The message here is not to get too concerned until the test is redone. If it comes back abnormal again tour doctor will advise you what to do next.
